Cornwall Boys U18 match v Devon Boys U18 at Weston-Super- Mare

The Cornwall Boys U18's team started the 2026 season with their annual fixture against Devon Boys U18's on Wednesday 18th February. This fixture is usually played in Devon or Cornwall, but as the South West Boys U18 Championships is being held at Weston-Super-Mare, it was decided it would be a good idea to have an extra practice round around the Somerset links course.

The course was presented in great condition, particularly considering the constant rain in recent weeks. We were extremely fortunate to get the fixture played, and credit must go to the club for the superb preparation of the course. The greens were especially impressive — true, consistent and a real test for all the players.

We would also like to warmly welcome Edward Walters and Owen Loton to Cornwall Golf, both making their first appearances for Cornwall U18s. It was great to see so many young county players uplifted to U18 level to gain valuable experience, which will stand them in good stead moving forward.

Owen Loton and Edward Walters

It was a proud moment for Tiernan, playing his first match as Junior Captain, and he certainly made it memorable by coming in with the highest score of the day with an excellent score of 36 points. Other impressive scores were Harry Joliffe with 34 points, Harrison Gurd, Alfie Chapman and Ryan Tozer with 33 points and Archie Haynes with 32 points.

Devon fielded a strong side, and it proved to be a hard-fought contest between the two counties in the scratch stableford format. The overall team result was calculated from the best 10 scores out of 12 players, and we were pleased to also include an additional four squad players to give them valuable experience and a run out with the U18s.

Cornwall finished with an impressive 311 points but narrowly lost to Devon, who finished on 315 points — just a four-point margin in what was a closely contested match throughout.

The team consisted of –

Alfie Chapman (St Enodoc), Joab Atkins (St Mellion), Tiernan Wallwork (Tehidy Park - Captain), Archie Haynes (Carlyon Bay), Harry Joliff (St Enodoc), Luke O’Hanlon (Bowood Park), Bobby Godfrey (St Enodoc), Harrison Gurd (Perranporth) Sam Hanton (St Enodoc), Rory Hudson (West Cornwall), Edward Walters (Launceston), Owen Loton (St Mellion), Will Dingle (St Enodoc), Charlie Emmett (Carlyon Bay), Ryan Tozer (Launceston), Ethan Kinski (St Mellion).

Congratulations to Ryan Tozer for a superb highlight on the day — an eagle on the 10th hole after chipping in. A brilliant moment and thoroughly deserved.

Overall, it was a positive and competitive day, played in great spirit, and an excellent learning opportunity for our developing squad. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Weston-super-Mare Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and to the Devon U18 Golf Team for a competitive and well-spirited match.
